a coping mechanism?

A new study focused on tattoos claims that women with four or more tattoos have a higher self-esteem. It’s up to us to decide whether it’s true toa  degree or not but at least it points out that tattoos may/ do have a positive impact on one’s life (either that or it’s just an assumption on my part cuz I’m so biased ;))

tattoos in New Zealand

Here’s sth from New Zealand about their local tattoo supply and demand so to speak.

back in time

Otzi again, this time almost fighting for his oldest-tattoos-ever title.

Myanmar women

An interesting article about tattooed women from Myanmar and how they feel about being photographed by tourists – a very interesting and much needed perspective, especially that phototourism is getting more and more popular.

prejudices

An old adage and even older truth – don’t judge a book by its cover proves to be true again.

Temporary tattoos used for medical monitoring purposes.

A short overview of tattoo TV, with such gems mentioned as Prison Break and Sons of Anarchy. I used to love the Prison Break show 😉

Finally, a short journey back in time to admire the beauty and charm of tattoos from the last century.

memorial tattoos and more

An interesting photo project/exhibit focused on memorial tattoos is going to make rounds in Canada.

Equally interesting is the project called Love Letter to the World!

Charleston tattoo scene

Tattoo scene in Charleston, SC – interesting to read how it’s been faring so far.

Gospozha

A German alternative model here.

act of kindness

Finally, a heart-warming story of a tattoo artist eager to help a kid suffering from a rare disease.

tattooed and tattooing

It’s a way to show emotions and moral support when needed – Paris tattoos.

political tattoos

It’s a way to make a political stand – Aung San Suu Kyi tattoos.

It’s a way to create our own identity and aesthetics and be who you really think you are – gender fluidity tattoos.

men's thoughts

It’s also a way to stop caring about what others think – what men really think about tattoos and piercings on women.

Audobon bird society tattoos

It’s a way to show what we are passionate about, even if it’s so “innocent” as birding.

Bundespolizei

It’s a way to have problems to get your dream job, unless the rules loosen somewhat.

It’s a way to find your way in life and maybe make a living from it.

miscellaneous

Certainly interesting is this article about an ink with an unusual ingredient, i.e. human hair. We’ve already seen ppl using their dear deceased’s ashes but hair, from a living person too, is sth new.

reconstructive surgery

If you decide stretched ears are not your thing anymore, ear reconstruction might be a good option. It’s been performed not only by plastic surgeons but also by skilled body mod practitoners.

Memento remake

The movie “Memento” about to be be remade.

tattoo charity event

A great thing to do – charity event at a local tattoo shop!

let’s express ourselves!

a means of self-expression

The Guardian seems to be on a roll with all the tattoos-related articles but I don’t mind it at all. this one may be not outstanding but still shows what tattoos can be about!

indigenous ink

I enjoyed reading this one – tattoos are WAY more than fashion, individual self-expression or a whim. They were born to show inclusion, belonging to a tribe, creating a sense of more than self-identity. It should be kept in mind.

(not only) Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th

Obviously a big deal as with all other Friday the 13th’s, so there’s no wonder that so many tattoo shops decided to use this opportunity to play with it. It’s quite cool that some Polish shop(s) did it, too, and with a good cause in mind at that!

More about Scott Campbell’s tattoo performance!

literary tattoos

Literary tattoos are always a good choice IMHO, so take a look at these suggestions (altho I’d never use any of it – I have my own favs).

Berber women's tattoos

Finally, a wonderful idea and lots of hard work put in this tattoo book!

a few contexts

I love posting about tattoos in many different contexts as it shows the best what a complex and fascinating issue tattoos are. As Epictetus said, “men are disturbed not by things, but by their opinions about things” and it’s very true in case of tattoos!

OK dress code thing

Tattoos in the workplace again, this time in OK where tattooing was legalized only in 2006. Hard to imagine, actually!

tattoos for a cause

Tattoos for a cause show how sensitive, involved and ready to help out many tattooed ppl are! It shouldn’t be forgotten!

Campbell

Scott Campbell an his new artistic endeavour in a one-man installation and performance of sort. Tattoos and art have met and started to thrive ages ago!

Weird-ish but interesting anyway: biohacking and LED implants, and a German guy with most flesh tunnels on his face (but you don’t really need to remove pieces of flesh to get your tunnels in!).

Not so simple, not so black-and-white, so maybe it’s better to see tattoos in the right, broader context?

New Zealand

tattoos and dress code in NZ

One could think that in a country so blessed with such a strong background of traditional tattoos, tattoos wouldn’t be so looked down upon. People are people, tho, so it’s not the case. As everywhere else, ppl’s perspectives on the subject vary and some are for, some against and some don’t really care. However, it’s still interesting to read how tattooed New Zealanders live and work, so here you have an article about the NZ workplace and tattoos.

Maori tattoos

Concidentally, German websites also ran some articles focused on NZ and tattoos, so take a look at this (some info on native New Zealanders between the lines) and also at a meagre few lines about Maori tattoos.

complex stories behind tattoos

refugees' tattoos

For or against refugees? Above all, we should see people like us in them, so I think it’s a really good idea to show some of the refugees’ tattoos and tell, very briefly, about stories behind these tattoos. Suddenly, refugees aren’t just nameless intruders but people with stories, background, families, past and present traumas, overall worth to be welcomed and helped. A bit in the same vein are these traditional tattoos on Kurdish women.

Tattoo art hitting the auction block‘ shows the work so good that it’s considered Art!

Ausdruck der Personlichkeit

Jochen Auer, the founder of the Wildstyle and Tattoo Messe – an interesting interview.

Finally, for all of us who kind of think that looks really matter – how to dress to complement our tattoos. Not surprisingly, black is always a good color! 😉
